The promise of a snow-melt system is that winter becomes automatic: the system runs silently overnight, there are no plow contractors to chase, no last-minute salt runs, no corrosive rock salt tracked across hardwood floors. But automatic only works if the system has been tested before the first freeze. Failing to conduct pre-season checks risks catastrophic failure on the morning of a blizzard. Snow-melt systems fall into two families with very different care profiles. The mechanical, fluid-based ecosystem — high-efficiency boilers, heat pumps, and circulator pumps moving propylene glycol — is powered by fluid dynamics and moving parts; its vulnerabilities are seized impellers, air in the lines, and pump failures against high static head, plus glycol degradation and corrosion over time. The solid-state, resistance-based ecosystem — direct electrical current at 30–50 watts per square foot — has zero moving parts, no fluid to leak, and its primary threat is external physical damage, most often a cable cut during surface repairs. Both are rated for 20+ years when installed properly.

The Pre-Season Electrical Checklist
